A mechanical fastener is used to join or affix two or more objects. Fasteners are typically used to create junctions that may be disassembled or removed without causing damage to the components they connect.
Hundreds of thousands of fasteners are used every day across the UK in a variety of industries from general maintenance and engineering work to complex rail MRO overhauls on train sets of various Classes.
All fasteners can be made from different materials and further plated to change their properties. A2 & A4 stainless steel, zinc plating in bright, yellow and black, geomet 500A. All change how a fastener interacts with components and the environment.
Sockets
Socket screws or bolts are tightened and removed with a hexagonal or shaped wrench. Socket screws, also called Allen head screws or bolts, are available in a variety of head shapes, including button head, cap head, grub head, and countersunk head.
Bolts
Bolts are a type of threaded fastener having an exterior male thread that requires a pre- formed female thread, such as a nut, to be matched. Bolts and screws are inextricably linked.
Nuts
Nuts are a type of fastener that features a threaded hole. To secure numerous components together, nuts are nearly typically used in conjunction with a mating bolt. The two partners are held together by a mixture of friction between their threads (with mild elastic deformation), a slight stretching of the bolt, and compression of the pieces that need to be held together.
Washers
A washer is a thin plate (usually disk-shaped, but occasionally square) with a hole in the centre that is used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a bolt or nut.
